Islambad (NNP) In a historic turn of events at the Senate, Yousaf Raza Gilani of the People’s Party secured the position of Senate Chairman unopposed, while Sardar Syedal Khan Nasir from the Muslim League-N clinched the Deputy Chairman seat unchallenged. The absence of competing candidates for these prestigious positions underscores a unique moment in Pakistan’s political landscape.
The day commenced with an aura of anticipation as Senators convened under the leadership of Presiding Officer Ishaq Dar. It was a ceremony marked by unity as newly elected senators from recent by-elections were sworn in, reaffirming their commitment to public service.
However, amidst the solemnity, tensions flared when PTI’s Zarqa Suhrawardy voiced a vehement protest during the swearing-in proceedings. Despite the disruption, order was swiftly restored, allowing senators to fulfill their constitutional duties.
Following the formalities, Yousaf Raza Gilani and Sardar Syedal Khan Nasir are poised to take their oaths at 12:30 noon, symbolizing a new chapter in the Senate’s history. As the upper house of Pakistan’s Parliament, the Senate plays a pivotal role in shaping the nation’s legislative agenda, with senators serving six-year terms to represent the interests of the people.
The unopposed election of Gilani and Nasir reflects a consensus among Senate members, setting the stage for collaborative governance and constructive dialogue in the pursuit of national progress.
