Islamabad, April 8, 2024: The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has taken a bold step in challenging the ongoing Senate elections, citing constitutional concerns over the incomplete electoral college. In a plea submitted to the Islamabad High Court (IHC), five PTI senators highlighted the absence of Senate polls in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (K-P), labeling the current electoral process ‘unconstitutional’.
The party’s petition calls for a postponement of the chairman and deputy chairman polls until Senate seats from K-P are filled. However, the registrar’s office has raised objections to the plea, noting that the matter of K-P senate seats is already being deliberated in the Peshawar High Court (PHC).
Amidst these legal maneuvers, PTI has also addressed a letter to the secretary of the Senate, expressing concern over what it perceives as a ‘deprivation’ of its legitimate right to participate in the election of the upper house’s leadership.
This development adds a new layer of complexity to the Senate elections, further intensifying the political landscape of Pakistan. As the legal battle unfolds, all eyes remain on the judiciary and its decision regarding the fate of the ongoing electoral process.
