Poonch’s Tomorrow Begins Today: A Vision for Peace, Education and Progress
Dr. Amar Jahangir
Poonch is a region blessed with natural beauty, historical significance, rich cultural traditions, and immense human potential. Its towering mountains, lush green valleys, flowing streams, and hospitable people give it a distinctive identity. However, its greatest asset is its talented youth, whose dreams and abilities can lay the foundation for a brighter future. To transform this potential into meaningful progress, peace, education, and collective awareness must become our fundamental priorities.Peace is not merely the absence of conflict; it is the promotion of tolerance, mutual respect, dialogue, and human dignity. Only a peaceful society can effectively develop its educational, social, and economic institutions. Poonch needs an environment where differences of opinion are resolved through dialogue rather than confrontation, and where collective interests are given priority beyond political and social affiliations.
Our true strength lies in mutual respect, tolerance, and shared responsibility.Education is the second fundamental pillar of this progress. It is not merely a means of obtaining degrees but a pathway to awareness, character building, critical thinking, and responsible citizenship. The youth of Poonch deserve quality education, modern technology, research facilities, vocational training, and better employment opportunities. Particular attention must be given to students in remote areas and girls’ education so that no talented young person is deprived of their dreams because of limited resources.Practical measures are essential to achieve these objectives. First, educational facilities in schools and universities should be improved, libraries made more functional, and scholarships provided to deserving students. Universities should encourage research conferences, literary events, career counselling, and research on local issues so that academic knowledge can be connected with community development.Similarly, under a ‘Poonch Youth Development Initiative’, young people can be trained in information technology, digital marketing, entrepreneurship, tourism, and vocational skills. Public and private institutions should collaborate to create internship and employment opportunities. Educated and experienced members of the Poonch community living abroad should also be engaged in local educational and development projects.Teachers, religious scholars, journalists, intellectuals, political representatives, and civil society organisations should play a constructive role in promoting social harmony. Community dialogue, sports, and cultural activities can help foster tolerance, mutual understanding, and unity among young people.Poonch’s development also depends on making effective use of its natural and cultural resources. Tourism, agriculture, traditional crafts, and local businesses can create new employment opportunities. For this purpose, a representative **Poonch Development Forum** could be established, bringing together educational institutions, government representatives, business communities, civil society, and young people to set annual development priorities and measurable targets.Allama Muhammad Iqbal beautifully expressed: ‘Zara nam ho to yeh mitti bari zarkhez hai Saqi.’ This verse beautifully reflects the potential of Poonch’s land and its talented youth. What is needed is to provide them with appropriate opportunities, proper guidance, and a supportive environment.
The future of Poonch will be illuminated not merely by its historical heritage and natural beauty, but by its enlightened youth, strong educational institutions, and peaceful social environment. Its mountains teach us perseverance, its rivers remind us of continuous effort, and its valleys inspire hope.Let us make peace our shared commitment, education our collective priority, and human dignity our fundamental value. The government, educational institutions, civil society, and the public must work together to initiate practical efforts that create better opportunities for generations to come. Poonch’s future will not change through aspirations alone; it must be shaped through knowledge, dialogue, mutual cooperation, responsible leadership, and sustained collective efforts.
