Geneva (NNP) In a compelling address to the United Nations General Assembly, Pakistan’s Ambassador Munir Akram passionately advocated for the enforcement of a ceasefire in besieged Gaza. With fervor, he urged the UN Security Council to take decisive action, insisting on the implementation of its resolution aimed at halting the violence against the Palestinian people.
Ambassador Akram’s call for action echoed sentiments expressed at the Arab-OIC Summit in Riyadh, where leaders urged for an immediate ban on the export of weapons and ammunition to Israel. Holding Israel accountable for its actions, he emphasized the need for the international community to address the grave injustices inflicted upon the people of Gaza.
At the heart of Pakistan’s stance lies unwavering support for Palestine’s full membership in the United Nations. Ambassador Akram underscored the significance of this step, declaring it as essential in making the Palestinian state a political reality.
The UN General Assembly convened amidst the backdrop of a vetoed resolution, sparking discussions on the Middle East crisis. Despite the adoption of Security Council resolution 2728 (2024), which called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, Israel’s non-compliance remained a cause for concern.
Ambassador Akram expressed disappointment in Israel’s defiance of the resolution, emphasizing the binding nature of Security Council decisions under the UN Charter. He pointed out flaws in the vetoed resolution, particularly the absence of a demand for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire, which garnered overwhelming support from the UN membership.
As tensions persist in the region, Pakistan’s impassioned plea for action reverberates within the halls of the United Nations, urging the international community to stand united in the pursuit of peace and justice for the Palestinian people.
