Renowned director and writer Asma Butt presiding over the meeting held to address the issues faced by artists from the twin cities.

  1. October 9, 2025 Rawalpind A large number of artists from Rawalpindi and Islamabad, troubled by ongoing injustices, lack of rights, and political interference in the Rawalpindi Arts Council, have approached senior producer and director Ms. Asma Butt. They requested that their issues be heard and that a strategy be formulated in consultation with artists to resolve these problems — so that artists can continue their positive cultural activities freely and independently.

Yesterday, at the strong request of artists from the twin cities, an important meeting was held under the chairpersonship of Ms. Asma Butt. During the meeting, artists expressed that the Rawalpindi Arts Council is still being run under the policies and regulations implemented by the previous PTI government. Despite the passage of two and a half years, the council has failed to take any practical steps for promoting artists, drama, and culture. They said it feels as though we are still living in the PTI era.

The artists further stated that the Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) government has always supported and uplifted both artists and the general public. Especially former Prime Minister Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif has not only encouraged artists but also provided financial assistance during difficult times, helped with their medical expenses, and ensured their dignity remained intact. That is why artists have always stood by Nawaz Sharif through thick and thin.

However, it is with great disappointment that they say, despite PML-N being in power now, the rights of artists are still being violated, and they are forced to protest for their basic rights. A few days ago, Chief Minister Punjab Ms. Maryam Nawaz declared, “I am responsible for Punjab.” Therefore, we strongly appeal to our Chief Minister to recognize the Rawalpindi Arts Council and its local artists as an important part of Punjab. Decisions concerning them must be made with their inclusion, and steps must be taken to address their issues.
