ISLAMBAD (NNP) As the by-elections loom on the horizon in Pakistan, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has taken decisive steps to ensure the smooth conduct of the electoral process. In a significant move, the ECP has granted returning officers (ROs) and presiding officers (POs) powers equivalent to those of first-class magistrates.
With the authority bestowed upon them, ROs and POs are poised to maintain order and uphold the integrity of the electoral process across five national and 16 provincial assembly constituencies. From Punjab to Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, and Balochistan, these officers are prepared to enforce the law and tackle any violations of the code of conduct set forth by the ECP.
The significance of this empowerment lies in its potential to streamline the by-elections, ensuring fairness and transparency in the electoral process. ROs and POs are now equipped to take swift action against any candidate who attempts to undermine the sanctity of the elections.
By granting them magisterial powers, the ECP has underscored its commitment to conducting free, fair, and impartial elections. With the by-elections scheduled for April 21 drawing near, all eyes are on Pakistan as the nation prepares to exercise its democratic right.
