Islamabad (NNP) Prof. Amjad Iqbal, a distinguished writer, poet, researcher, and educationist, emphasized the crucial role of literature and writers in shaping the intellectual and mental training of societies and future generations. In a special meeting, Prof. Iqbal stressed that the continued engagement of responsible intellectuals is essential for fostering a culture of peace, harmony, brotherhood, and tolerance.
Expressing his concerns, Prof. Iqbal lamented that the current generation lacks influential figures to guide their character and intellectual development. He urged serious intellectuals to step up and fulfill this role. Addressing the state of contemporary Urdu poetry, Prof. Iqbal acknowledged an increase in quantity but noted a decline in quality.
Prof. Iqbal criticized social media for overshadowing traditional literary gatherings like Mushairas, which have historically been a cornerstone of literary culture. Highlighting prominent poets, he praised Ahmed Faraz for his vibrant ghazals and June Elia for his unique style and intellectual depth. He also commended Nasir Mangal’s powerful and accessible poetic voice.
Reflecting on the interplay of tradition and innovation in poetry, Prof. Iqbal asserted that poets must integrate these elements to enrich their work. Sharing insights from his personal journey, he revealed that his passion for poetry began in childhood and has only grown stronger during his 26-year tenure as an Urdu teacher.
Prof. Iqbal mentioned his contributions to literary criticism, particularly in reviewing textbooks for the Federal Education Board. He also disclosed plans to publish several works, including a travelogue on the Khyber and Orzai districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
In conclusion, Prof. Iqbal called for a renewed commitment to nurturing the intellectual and moral fabric of society through literature, urging contemporary writers and thinkers to take up the mantle of this vital responsibility.
