Islamabad (NNP) Senior leader of the People’s Party, Syed Khursheed Ahmad Shah, has reiterated his longstanding proposal for a four-year term for the government and assemblies. He emphasized that a shorter term would ensure smoother governance and reduce political instability.
Speaking at a press conference, Shah highlighted that while the official term for assemblies is five years, governments in practice rarely last more than three and a half to four years. He argued that adopting a four-year term could have spared the country from many political upheavals over the past twelve years.
Shah recalled that during the PML-N government, there was a proposal for a four-year term to be implemented for subsequent governments. He believes that such a change would bring stability to institutions, with the first three years being relatively peaceful and the fourth year focused on election preparations.
He called for a collective decision-making process to address systemic flaws and emphasized the need for consensus among political parties. Shah suggested that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif should take the lead in initiating talks with all political stakeholders, including PTI.
However, Shah expressed concerns about the internal dynamics of PTI, noting that leadership changes have been frequent and it is unclear who holds decision-making authority. He mentioned that while some PTI leaders are open to negotiations, the ultimate decision rests with a single influential individual within the party.
Shah concluded by urging all political entities to collaborate and make the necessary decisions to ensure the stability and efficacy of Pakistan’s democratic processes.
