Murree Brewery Eyes Expansion After Export Approval Ends Decades-Long Ban

RAWALPINDI: A heady aroma of malt and brewing yeast fills the air at Murree Brewery, Pakistan’s oldest and largest brewery, as it prepares for expansion following government approval to export its products abroad after nearly five decades.Founded in 1860 to cater to British soldiers and colonial communities during the Raj, Murree Brewery has weathered strict regulations and social opposition to emerge as one of Pakistan’s most recognized companies. Bottles and cans now clatter steadily along its production lines, reflecting renewed optimism for growth beyond domestic markets.Calling the company’s survival a testament to perseverance, Managing Director Isphanyar Bhandara, the third generation of his family to lead the business, said the brewery’s history has been marked by resilience. “It’s been a roller-coaster journey,” he told AFP, adding that the export approval opens a new chapter for the iconic firm.
