Islamabad, Wednesday, September 17, 2025 nnpakistan – A significant meeting of the Executive Committee of the Pakistan–Maldives Parliamentary Friendship Group (PFG) was held today at the Parliament House, Islamabad, with the visiting Parliamentary Delegation from the Maldives. The meeting marked an important milestone in advancing the longstanding friendship and cooperative relations between the two brotherly countries.
The meeting was chaired by Dr. Shaista Khan, MNA, Convener of the Pakistan–Maldives PFG, who warmly welcomed the delegation and reaffirmed Pakistan’s strong commitment to deepening relations with the Maldives through the vital channel of parliamentary diplomacy. She emphasized that such exchanges strengthen institutional linkages, foster goodwill and convey a clear message of friendship, solidarity and long-term cooperation.
In her remarks, Dr. Shaista Khan highlighted the historic foundation of Pakistan–Maldives relations, rooted in goodwill, Islamic brotherhood and mutual respect. She underlined the importance of expanding collaboration in trade, education, tourism, health, climate resilience, youth development, and defense cooperation.
From the Maldivian side, H.E. Mr. Husnee Mubarak and other members of the delegation appreciated Pakistan’s support and reaffirmed the Maldives’ commitment to strengthening bilateral ties. They identified tourism and fisheries as priority sectors, while also expressing interest in enhanced cooperation in renewable energy, agriculture (including mango exports), education, vocational training, and scholarship exchanges.
Members of the Pakistan–Maldives PFG, including Syeda Nosheen Iftikhar, Mr. Mohammad Usman Badini, Dr. Shazia Sobia Aslam Soomro, Ms. Sabheen Ghoury and Mr. Amjad Ali Khan, underscored the need to broaden cooperation in trade, youth development, agriculture, IT and digital collaboration and health. They emphasized the value of people-to-people linkages, direct connectivity through air and sea routes, cultural and academic exchanges and business-to-business partnerships to build sustainable ties.
Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening Pakistan–Maldives relations through parliamentary cooperation. It was agreed to explore the establishment of direct flights to facilitate travel and commerce, expand sports diplomacy through football, cricket and other exchanges and encourage joint participation in expos and cultural platforms.
From the Maldivian side the delegation consisted of members of the parliament, Mr. Husnee Mubarak, Mr. Mohamed Shahid, Mr. Yoosuf Nasheed and Mr. Abdulla Shazeem.
