FBR’s Move to Block Mobile Sims of Non-Tax Filers Sparks Legal Debate

Posted on May 1, 2024 by News Desk

ISLAMBAD (NNP)Legal experts and civil rights organizations have raised concerns over the recent order by the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) to block the mobile sims of users who do not file income tax, calling it illegal and unconstitutional.

Senior lawyers, including Azhar Sadiq Advocate and Mian Dawood Advocate, have criticized the FBR’s decision, stating that such action requires proper legislation and falls under abuse of authority. They argue that the FBR lacks the legal mandate to intervene in the contractual agreements between consumers and mobile service providers.

Furthermore, civil rights organizations have condemned the move, likening it to depriving citizens of basic civil rights. They argue that instead of addressing systemic issues in tax collection, the government is resorting to punitive measures that target ordinary citizens

The controversy has sparked a broader debate on tax collection policies and government accountability. While the FBR aims to increase tax revenue, critics argue that the focus should be on creating a fair and transparent tax system that targets actual tax evaders rather than burdening the general population.

As the legal and public discourse intensifies, the fate of the FBR’s order remains uncertain, with potential legal challenges looming ahead.
