ISSI hosts Roundtable Discussion with EU Special Envoy for Non-Proliferation and Disarmament

The Arms Control and Disarmament Centre (ACDC) at the Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad (ISSI) hosted a wide-ranging Roundtable Discussion with EU Special Envoy for Non-Proliferation and Disarmament Ambassador Stephan Klement. The session at the ISSI was aimed at exchanging views on a range of subjects, including arms control, non-proliferation, and disarmament. Participants from the ISSI included Ambassador Khalid Mahmood, Chairman BoG; Ambassador Zamir Akram, Member BoG; and members of the ACDC team. Malik Qasim Mustafa, Director ACDC, moderated the session.

 

The discussion was attended by eminent Pakistani diplomats, practitioners, academics, area experts, and members of think-tanks focusing on strategic issues, including Ambassador Tahir Hussain Andrabi, ACDIS MOFA; Maj Gen Syed Shahab Shahid, DG ACDA; Ambassador Ali Sarwar Naqvi, Executive Director CISS; Maj. Gen. Ausaf Ali (Retd.); Ambassador Baber Amin; Ambassador Tariq Usman Hyder; Dr. Zafar Nawaz Jaspal, Dean Social Sciences, QAU; Dr. Adil Sultan, Dean FASS, Air University, and Mr. Imran Ahmed, PAEC.

During the wide-ranging interactive discussion, participants engaged in substantive exchanges on international and regional peace, strategic stability, arms control, and disarmament, with a particular focus on global and regional developments. Discussions covered the implications of emerging technologies, multilateral export control regimes, and global security hotspots, including Ukraine and Iranโ€™s nuclear program. Both Pakistan and the EU reaffirmed their commitment to regular, structured engagement, emphasizing the need to enhance cooperation in science, technology, and non-proliferation. The discussion highlighted the shared objective of promoting understanding, convergence, and coordination on key global security issues.
