When Mrs. Benazir Bhutto succeeded in forming the government for the first time in December 1988, for the first time in the history of the People’s Party, Syed Qaim Ali Shah of the Syed family was appointed as the Chief Minister of Sindh.
Aftab Shaban Mirani is the last non-Syed Chief Minister nominated by the PPP so far. He held the position for only six months from February 25, 1990 to August 6, 1990. Later, when he got power, he again chose the Syed family for the Chief Ministership and appointed Syed Abdullah Shah as the Chief Minister of Sindh.
He remained in this position from July 19, 1993 until the dissolution of the assemblies on November 6, 1996. After nearly eleven years, in March 2008, the PPP emerged as the majority party in Sindh once again, then the PPP led by Asif Ali Zardari appointed Syed Qaim Ali. Shah was appointed the Chief Minister of Sindh for the second time for five years.
After the completion of the term of the assembly, in the election of May 2013, PPP emerged again as the majority party, then Syed Qaim Ali Shah was again appointed as the chief minister.
He remained in this position till July 25, 2016. On July 26, 2016, the lot of the Chief Ministership was opened in the name of another Syed family of Sindh, Syed Murad Ali Shah, who remained in this position until May 28, 2018.
Chairman People’s Party Bilawal Bhutto has maintained the tradition of appointing Syed Murad Ali Shah as the Chief Minister after winning the fourth consecutive election in the province in 2024.
In general, PPP has formed seven governments of different terms in Sindh province, the total time of which is about 24 years, in which six people who belonged to Bhutto, Jatoi, Mirani and Syed family became the Chief Minister of Sindh.
During the PPP regime, the chief ministership has been held mostly by the personalities of the Syed family, with a total tenure of 18 years and 3 months.Chief Ministers Mumtaz Bhutto and Ghulam Mustafa Jatoi in Zulfikar Ali Bhutto government, Syed Qaim Ali Shah Aftab Shaban Mirani during Benazir Bhutto’s regime and Syed Qaim Ali Shah and Murad Ali Shah during the period of Abdullah Shah and Bilawal Bhutto were elected for this post.
The interesting thing is that in Sindh, the Prime Minister was formed from the Syed family supported by PP in the last term of Benazir Bhutto and when the People’s Party returned to the government eleven years after the martyrdom of Ms. Benazir Bhutto, the Chief Ministership was in the Syed family. is going
